Dice the onion and slice mushrooms thinly and evenly.
Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
Add the onions and mushrooms to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions and mushrooms are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
Drizzle the maple syrup over the onions and mushrooms and stir to combine. Continue cooking for 10 minutes
Once cooked taste and add salt and pepper to taste, then serve hot.
Serve your caramelized onion and mushrooms as a side dish, over pasta, on toast, or alongside grilled meat.
