This is an overview of the ingredients. You'll find the full measurements and instructions in the green recipe card (printable) at the bottom of the page.
🔪 Instructions
This is an overview of the instructions. Full instructions are in the green recipe card at the bottom of the page.

- Top beef mixture with mashed potatoes.
- Dot the top with the remaining butter and black pepper. Transfer to oven. Bake and enjoy!
🥫 Storage
Love the taste of homemade Salisbury steaks—but not all the prep? Me neither! Thankfully, Salisbury steak casserole is so easy to store, make ahead of time, or freeze.
Refrigerate
Let the casserole cool down a bit, then transfer leftovers to an airtight container or cover with plastic wrap. They'll last for five days.
Freeze
Follow the steps for refrigeration, but make sure to use a freezer-safe container or tightly-covered disposable foil casserole dish.
Then, freeze for up to two months. Let the leftovers thaw in the fridge before reheating.
Reheating
The best way to quickly reheat Salisbury steak casserole is right in the microwave! I like to do so in one-minute increments, stirring in between, so everything heats evenly.
📖 Variations
- No beef? No problem! Ground turkey or pork tastes great, too.
- If your kids are sensitive to the texture of diced onion, swap it with onion powder, instead. Use a teaspoon or two.
- You can also add minced garlic if you like the flavor.
- If you don't like cream of mushroom soup, stir in premade beef gravy.
- You can also make a rich mushroom gravy with beef drippings, broth, mushrooms, and flour if you feel like getting fancy! No pressure, though.
- If you can't find cream of mushroom soup, any other flavor (like chicken or celery) will work, but it won't taste as close to Salisbury steak.
- Make your own mashed potatoes, or buy 'em premade for easy prep.
- You can swap the mash with frozen hash browns for a fun switch.
- Drizzle in a little Worcestershire sauce for extra savory flavor.
- Toss sliced mushrooms into the meat mixture to make it stretch.
- Drain a can of green beans and lay them on top of the beef layer. Canned carrots would taste good, too - then you've got shepherd's pie!
- Kids won't eat anything without cheese? I feel that! Sprinkle some cheddar cheese over the potatoes during the last minutes of baking.
💭 Things to know
Expert Tip: Make sure your skillet is oven-proof. If it has plastic handles, it's not safe to go in the oven—they'll melt!
- Don't have an oven-proof skillet? Simply transfer the cooked meat to a greased casserole dish. Then, finish assembling and bake!
- Lean ground beef (90/10 or better) is best for Salisbury steak casserole. If you use a fattier mix, drain off the grease before adding the water and soup.
- If you've made the casserole ahead of time, you can bake it straight from the freezer. However, it'll take a little longer. I recommend keeping it covered with foil for a half hour in the oven. Then, remove the foil and cook until everything is hot throughout.

👩🍳 FAQs
A Salisbury steak is an oval patty made of ground beef, typically simmered and smothered in a thick gravy. It's a family favorite meal that's been around for decades!
Yep, but we aren't making a traditional Salisbury steak recipe. Patties use bread crumbs as a binder to help hold the meat together. Since we are making a casserole, there is no need. Easy, right?
That's okay. You can make your own if you have the following ingredients: 1 tablespoon of onion powder, 2 tablespoons of beef bouillon paste, and ¼ teaspoon each of parsley, black pepper, paprika, onion salt (or regular salt), celery seed, and white sugar.
