📖 Variations
- Feel free to swap out the ham for salty bacon bits, sausage crumbles, or shredded chicken.
- Replace the garlic powder with 4-5 cloves of minced fresh garlic for a milder garlic flavor.
- You can substitute soy sauce for Worcestershire sauce in a pinch. It won’t have the same depth of flavor, though.
- Omit the hot sauce if you prefer a mild dip, and serve it on the side for others to enjoy.
- Or, if you’re craving extra heat, add some red pepper flakes, green chiles, jalapenos, or a can of Rotel to your dip!
- Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack, and Colby Jack cheese are just as tasty as cheddar in this cheesy dip, so use whatever you like!
- Make it extra fun and bake it in this easy bread bowl for dip.

🥫 How to store leftovers
Refrigerate room temperature dip in an airtight container or in a baking dish tightly wrapped in plastic wrap for up to four days. Leftovers are great on toast for lunch!
You can reheat the dip in the microwave or a saucepan on the stovetop until warm. Stir frequently and heat in short bursts to prevent it from splitting.
I don’t recommend freezing Mississippi sin dip. The cream cheese mixture can become grainy and separate after freezing and reheating.
💭 Things to know
Expert Tip: Grate your cheddar cheese fresh from a block rather than buy a bag of store-bought shredded cheese. It melts much better in the oven and guarantees a super creamy, gooey dip!
- As a general rule of thumb, let sour cream and cream cheese warm to room temperature. It’s much easier to blend softened dairy ingredients.
- Green onions give this dip a signature crunch and mild onion taste. I don’t recommend replacing them with onion powder or regular onions.
- Whip the cream cheese and sour cream together with an electric mixer until light and fluffy before adding the rest of the ingredients. This incorporates more air into the mixture, so it’s easier to scoop!
- Serve your party dip with tortilla chips, potato chips, crackers, crostinis, bread cubes, carrots, cucumbers, or a loaf of crusty bread. Yum.
👩🍳 FAQs
It might sound obvious, but don’t use the thinly sliced deli ham meant for sandwiches in this ham dip recipe. Use cooked ham for the best results—smoked, honey, or black forest ham all work great. Leftover holiday ham makes delicious Mississippi sin dip!
In that case, feel free to head to the deli counter. However, ask for ham cut into thick slices, about half of an inch thick. Then, you can cube it up at home and stir it in!
I don’t recommend it. Pre-shredded cheese contains an anti-caking coating that prevents it from melting smoothly. Use freshly grated cheese for a perfectly creamy dip.
Absolutely! You can assemble the dip ahead of time and refrigerate it in the casserole dish covered with aluminum foil until ready to bake.
Sure. You can cook the dip in a crock pot on low for 3-4 hours before serving. You just won’t get the same golden brown crust as you would in the oven.
It’s easy! You’ll need a round loaf of French bread or Italian bread. Use a serrated knife to cut a hole in the top of the bread and remove the soft insides. Fill the hollowed-out loaf of bread with the dip mixture.
Wrap the loaf in aluminum foil, place it on a baking sheet, and bake it for 45 minutes or until warmed through. Don't forget to save the leftover bread pieces for dipping later!
