❤️ Why you'll love it
- They're really easy to make - just mix everything together and you will have delicious burgers in no time.
- One packet of Lipton Onion Soup Mix makes these burgers irresistible and extra juicy.
- A great way to spice up your usual dinner routine.
The Lipton onion soup burger recipe has been popular for decades because it's so easy to make and the burgers are out of this world delicious!
I've substituted beef stock for the half cup water called for in the original recipe to give them even bigger flavor!
Once they're cooked add your favorite toppings; American cheese, pickled onions, or whatever you like. Then, I like a pile of homemade tater tots on the side!
🧾 Ingredients
This is an overview of the ingredients. You'll find the full measurements and instructions in the green recipe card (printable) at the bottom of the page.
🔪 Instructions
This is an overview of the instructions. Full instructions are in the green recipe card at the bottom of the page.
- Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.
- Mix well. If you have time, let it sit for 20 minutes. The flavor really infuses the meat that way.
- Shape into 8 patties. Use your thumb to indent the center of each patty.
- Grill or broil until done to your liking, about 12 minutes. Put on your favorite hamburger bun with your favorite toppings.
🥫 Storage
To assemble and freeze for later:
Assemble the beef patties ahead, separate with parchment paper in a freezer bag, and freeze for up to three months.
Thaw in the refrigerator overnight and then cook as desired.
Storing leftover cooked burgers:
Store leftover burgers in an airtight container for up to three days in the fridge or freeze for up to three months.
Reheat leftover patties in the microwave for one minute or for juicy burgers reheat in a skillet with a small amount of water until warm all the way through.
Or, if you have just a few left over, crumble them up in my favorite cheeseburger soup with caramelized onions! SO good.
📖 Variations
Up your burger game with one of these variations.
- Instead of onion soup mix, you can also use beefy onion soup mix, savory herb, or onion mushroom soup mix. Just be sure they're the dry mixes!
- A splash of Worcestershire sauce added to the beef mixture will give a deep rich flavor.
- Caramelized onions will add a sweet flavor to this easy recipe. Chop them and mix in the patties or add them on top of the finished burger.
- If you enjoy a bit of heat in your burgers add some black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes to your meat mixture.
- Use a ranch seasoning packet instead of dry onion soup mix for another way to change the flavor of this burger recipe.
- If you prefer turkey burgers you can use ground turkey (or chicken) instead of beef.
- Garlic powder and onion powder added to the beef mixture would also add some additional flavor to this easy recipe.
💭 Things to know
Expert Tip: Don't skip the thumbprint step. This helps prevent the burgers from shrinking too much when they cook.
- Using a food scale ensures all burgers are the same size and cook evenly.
- Try adding in a cup of cooked rice, quinoa, or bread crumbs for extra bulk if you need to stretch your meat.
- Use an instant read meat thermometer to ensure you get exactly the doneness that you want.
- The internal temperature of burgers should be 160 degrees F when you remove them from the grill, then let them rest 5 to 10 minutes.
- Top these retro onion soup burgers with your favorite toppings: lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and mayo. Don't forget the cheese!
- Be sure to watch your burger patties closely so that they don't burn, you know they are ready to flip when they release from the skillet or grill.
- I like to melt butter first when cooking the burgers in a skillet, and then cook the burgers in the butter.

👩🍳 FAQs
Lipton onion soup mix is a dry seasoning made from dehydrated onions, salt, sugar, cornstarch, vegetable bouillon (hydrolyzed soy and corn protein, autolyzed yeast extract, maltodextrin), spices, dehydrated garlic, and disodium inosinate & guanylate.
I like to use red onions to top the burgers with, or yellow onions to caramelize.
No, onion soup mix is a different recipe than French onion soup. French onion soup is made with beef stock, onions, and a crouton-covered cheese topping.
