🧾 Ingredients
This is an overview of the ingredients. You'll find the full measurements and instructions in the green recipe card (printable) at the bottom of the page.
📖 Variations
- If you have other ground meat to use up, mix them in with the beef. Ground pork, ground turkey, ground venison, and ground chicken all work well.
- Feel free to sprinkle the top of the meatloaf with cheddar cheese during the last ten minutes of baking time. Or, mix it into the meat mixture!
- Toss in some extra veggies if you prefer more texture. Some people like to use mushrooms, spinach, or diced red or green bell pepper.
- Throw some crispy bacon bits into the meat mixture for more flavor, or lay some bacon strips across the top before baking.
🔪 Instructions
This is an overview of the instructions. Full instructions are in the green recipe card at the bottom of the page.
- Combine ground beef, onion, eggs, salt, and steak sauce.
- Add the milk and breadcrumbs. Use a light hand to mix it all together.
- Place mixture in a greased loaf pan and brush with more sauce.
- Bake and pour off grease. Top with remaining sauce and bake for ten more minutes. Meatloaf internal temperature should be 165F.
🥫 How to store leftovers
Heinz 57 meatloaf is easy to store and tastes great the next day. We like to use the leftovers to make special meatloaf sandwiches on fluffy white bread for lunch.
Simply cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or foil. You can also transfer leftovers to a separate storage container.
Keep the meatloaf refrigerated for three to four days. You can also store it in the freezer for up to three months.
Thaw frozen meatloaf in the fridge for a day or two. Then, heat individual pieces in the microwave until hot.
💭 Things to know
Expert Tip: Don’t pack the meatloaf too tightly, or overwork it—the meatloaf will be tough. Just combine until everything’s mixed together and gently form it into the pan.
- Dry bread crumbs aren’t just used as filler. They absorb the fat (and flavor!) from the meat as it cooks, keeping your meatloaf juicy and delicious. Don’t skip ‘em!
- If your meatloaf tends to fall apart, be sure to follow the recipe closely. Using the right amount of milk, breadcrumbs, and large eggs helps bind the meatloaf together.
- Let it rest! Don’t cut into the meatloaf straight out of the oven. Give it ten minutes or so before digging in.
- Heinz 57 meatloaf is a great recipe to prep in advance. Form the meatloaf in an aluminum foil tray and freeze it, uncooked. You can also give the meatloaf away to new moms or friends who aren’t feeling well as an easy freezer meal.
👩🍳 FAQs
Used as our meatloaf sauce, Heinz 57 is a dipping sauce for steak and other kinds of beef. It’s an orangey sauce that tastes similar to a blend of ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.
You can, but it won’t be Heinz 57 meatloaf, in that case! Make your own meatloaf sauce recipe with ketchup or tomato sauce and some brown sugar. Most people also like a touch of mustard or vinegar to cut through the richness. Taste test it and adjust the flavors to your liking.
Sure thing! However, raw ground beef only lasts for a few days in the fridge. You can assemble the meatloaf, cover it, and refrigerate for up to one day.
Milk helps hydrate the dry bread crumbs but also adds a little extra moisture. I recommend using higher-fat milk, such as whole milk. 2% or 1% will work just fine, too.
