Frozen Honeydew Margaritas...and Other Fruit Flavors
I am not much of a plain margarita fan but add some frozen fruit to it, blend it up with ice until it's slushy and smooth, and add it to a chilled glass and I am happy.
Ecstatic.
Overjoyed.
In love.
I am not sophisticated enough for scotch on the rocks on a regular basis and martinis (unless there is chocolate involved) tend to bore me. Nope, I am not grown up enough to drink grown up cocktails -- I want mine to taste like some variation of KoolAid.
And that's where this drink comes in.
I Blame On the Border
I have a summer addiction to the watermelon margaritas at On the Border. I would stop in there every, single day if I could afford it and if I could actually get work done while in a margarita haze.
Since that's not possible I try to keep it to a couple of times during the summer and then make them at home on the weekends. When I came up with the bright idea of a honeydew margarita I honestly had no idea that it was a "thing". I just wanted to do a variation on the watermelon kind that I loved already.
Since I like my margaritas frozen I pop the fruit in the freezer an hour or so before I am ready to make my drink. That way it is all frozen and slushy without being watered down by ice. It's imperative that you start with a very ripe, flavorful melon BUT if your honeydew turns out to be a little on the bland side a little extra sugar and Midori go a long way. 😉
Margarita FAQs
Here are the questions I am most frequently asked about this recipe.
How much alcohol is in a margarita?
There's roughly 2 ounces of alcohol per drink, depending on the size of the cocktail and the other ingredients, of course.
What does a honeydew margarita taste like?
The best margaritas are a perfect balance of sweet, sour, bitter, and for some people - salty. The actual flavors depend on the ingredients used - so a honeydew margarita tastes of a sweet, sour, bitter, salty, honeydew and so on.
What is the difference between Triple Sec and Cointreau?
Surprise! Cointreau IS Triple Sec! Cointreau is a brand while Triple Sec is the type. So it's like asking what the difference is between Patron Silver and tequila.
What's the best tequila for margaritas?
I like Patron Silver for this honeydew margarita because it doesn't change the bright color and because it lets the flavor really come through. Your favorite silver tequila is fine.
How do you add salt or sugar to the rim of a Margarita?
I always dip the rim of an ice cold glass in lime juice then dip it in a plate of salt crystals or sugar.
If you have trouble getting the crystals to stick try rubbing the rim of the glass with a thin layer of raw egg white or, for sweet margaritas, a layer of white corn syrup.
Honeydew Margarita Recipe Variations
There are a variety of ways to make this honey dew margarita your own. In fact, if you don't have honey dew any melon will can be substituted. ( I originally said "any melon will do" but... )
- For non-alcoholic version of a honeydew margarita use water instead of tequila - or blend everything except together without the tequila and then thin it with Sprite or 7-Up
- Use watermelon or cantaloupe instead of the honeydew
- Add a jalapeno pepper to the tequila about 2 hours before making cocktails
- Use ½ ounce of liquid from candied jalapenos for each cocktail
