🧾 Ingredients
This is an overview of the ingredients. You'll find the full measurements and instructions in the green recipe card (printable) at the bottom of the page.
📖 Variations
- Although grated fresh nutmeg gives the best flavor, you can sprinkle truffles with ground nutmeg, too.
- You can use rum extract, vanilla extract, cinnamon extract, and even real rum or bourbon to flavor your egg nog truffles.
- Use white chocolate chips if you don’t have white candy melts. It will just be a little more difficult to dip your truffles.
- Increase the amount of rum extract for an extra boozy flavor!
- Top the candy coating with holiday sprinkles for a decorative finish! Be sure to do so before the coating sets so your sprinkles stick.
🔪 Instructions
This is an overview of the instructions. Full instructions are in the green recipe card at the bottom of the page.
- Mix the cream cheese, powdered sugar, nutmeg, and rum extract in a large bowl on medium speed until smooth.
- Add the melted chocolate and chill overnight.
- Form truffle mixture into balls, place them on a parchment paper or wax paper-lined tray, and chill.
- Dip the truffle balls in the melted white candy melts. Then, place truffles on the prepared baking sheet, sprinkle with nutmeg, and chill.
🥫 How to store leftovers
I just love treats that last—it makes entertaining and prepping for guests even easier.
You can keep these eggnog truffles in an airtight container in the fridge for one week. Be sure to place parchment paper between the layers.
You can also make eggnog truffles ahead of time and freeze them in an airtight container for up to one month. Again, it's important to put parchment paper between the layers.
Let them thaw overnight in the fridge before serving.
💭 Things to know
Expert Tip: Don’t use low-fat or fat-free ingredients. You need full-fat cream cheese to get that luscious texture, and low-fat chocolate chips don’t melt well.
- Let cold cream cheese soften to room temperature before mixing it with the powdered sugar, nutmeg, and rum extract.
- Use either a handheld electric mixer or a food processor to blend the ingredients. Just make sure the mixture is completely smooth—you don’t want chunks in your truffles!
- The cream cheese mixture is very soft and sticky, so dust hands with powdered sugar to make shaping the truffle balls easier.
- Don’t forget to line your cookie sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. Otherwise, your truffles will stick and be a pain to remove!
- Use a small ice cream scoop or cookie scoop to make all your truffle balls the same size.
- Microwave the white candy melts in a small, microwavable bowl at 50% power and in short intervals after the first minute—be extra careful not to overheat or burn the chocolate.
- Allow white candy melts to cool slightly before dipping your chilled truffles so you don’t melt them in the process.
- Let the excess chocolate drip off each truffle before placing them on the cookie sheet to chill. Otherwise, you will get a puddle of melted chocolate at the base of each truffle.
- If you have leftover truffles to store in the fridge, separate each layer of truffles with a sheet of wax paper so they don’t stick together.
👩🍳 FAQs
Yep! This eggnog truffles recipe freezes well for up to one month. If you make your truffles now, you’ll have the perfect treat ready for Christmas day!
You don’t actually need real eggnog for these truffles. Eggnog is made with cream, vanilla, eggs, and spices. These truffles taste just like eggnog because of the creamy ingredients and nutmeg on top!
No, I recommend using pure rum extract (or a pure extract substitution) in eggnog truffles. Imitation rum is made of artificial flavoring and doesn’t have the same rich flavor as pure does.
Absolutely! For this recipe, you can substitute the rum extract with one and a half teaspoons of dark rum or a tablespoon of light rum.
If you dip the truffle in the candy melt mixture and it gets crackly, the temperature difference is too large. Let the candy melts cool a little before trying again.
If you've heated the candy melts slowly, but they're still too thick to dip, add a little vegetable oil or coconut oil—up to two tablespoons, max! Stir it in until you have a better consistency.
