📖 Variations
- Boneless chicken thighs can be substituted for chicken breast.
- So can boneless pork.
- Add some vegetables to this chicken, by adding a bag of frozen mixed vegetables at the last hour of cooking.
- If you are a mushroom fan, switch out the cream of chicken soup for cream of mushroom soup or a can of Campbell's golden mushroom soup. Or just try this slow cooker chicken stroganoff.
- You can add sliced fresh mushrooms if you like them.
- Change up the flavor of this delectable sauce completely by using a ranch packet or a zesty Italian dressing packet.
- Parmesan cheese makes a great addition to this delicious dish, I recommend using freshly grated parmesan, you can add it to the
slow cooker with the cream soup mixture. - Out of chicken stock? Chicken broth, vegetable broth, or white wine can be used instead, I like to add extra garlic if I am using chicken broth instead of chicken stock.

🥫 How to store leftover angel chicken
Store leftover angel chicken in an airtight container (or covered with plastic wrap) in the fridge for up to three days.
Reheat it in the microwave for 2 minutes, stir, and then heat in 30 second intervals until hot. You can also warm it gently on top of the stove, stirring often.
Don't freeze the leftovers. The sauce can become grainy.
Expert Tip:
Y'all be sure to spray the crockpot well with no-stick cooking spray or use a
💭 Things to know
- Be sure to use the packet of dry Italian seasoning. Add it to the crock pot DRY.
- Keep the cover on the crockpot! Every time you take it off you let the heat out and it needs to build up again.
- If you are out of garlic cloves, you can use one teaspoon of garlic powder in place of the cloves.
- Add a dash of white wine to this dish to make a rich sauce.
- Be sure that you do not melt the butter and cream cheese. You only want to soften them so that you can mix them together.
- If you are using chicken tenderloins instead of boneless skinless chicken breasts, you can reduce the cooking time down to four hours on the low setting instead of six.
- For extra flavor, you can season the chicken breasts with salt and black pepper before adding them to the
slow cooker . - I always like to cook my chicken breasts on low heat so that they don't become tough.
🍝 Angel hair vs spaghetti
The difference between the two noodles is that angel hair is much finer than spaghetti noodles. Angel hair pasta is best for light and creamy sauces instead of a hearty tomato-based sauce.
🫗 Is you sauce too thin?
I've been really confused by comments that the sauce is too thin. I'm not sure why that would be but here are my suggestions:
- Shred the chicken in the sauce about 30 minutes before you plan to serve it. It's meant to go over rice, pasta, bread, or potatoes so the shredded chicken will help thicken in up.
- Make sure you're using dry Italian dressing mix and not liquid Italian dressing.
- Use regular Philadelphia brand cream cheese. Do not use low fat or fat free. Do not use an off brand. You can use up to 8 ounces if you wish.
- Add just ¼ cup of chicken stock and see if you like the consistency better.
- If it's too thin you can save it by removing as much of the sauce as possible, mixing in 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, and heating it in a pan over the stove until it gets as thick as you like.
👩🍳 FAQs
Cooking chicken in a crockpot is generally done on the low setting. This will ensure that the meat is not overcooked or tough.
Yes, you can overcook chicken in a crockpot. If left on too long, the chicken may become dry and tough.
Yes, you can but I recommend that you thaw it first, so that your sauce doesn't become runny.

about how many chicken breasts do you use?
Marye says
1 1/2 lbs. The number will change depending on the size of the chicken breast which can really vary. For me that's about 4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts.
Dawn Ehrenstrasser says
Can I sub anything for the italian dressing?
Marye says
Italian seasoning I suppose?
Lori says
Can you use boneless, skinless chicken thighs? And if so would you adjust cooking time?
Marye says
Yes - with no adjustment to time.
Meg says
Help! This turned out VERY salty. I didn’t add the salt that the recipe called for and I used reduced sodium chicken broth. How can I fix it?
Marye says
Hi Meg, I don't understand why it would be salty. I am currently on vacation with limited access to the internet but I'll try to contact you when I get back in a week or so.
Skip Hay says
I love this recipe. I always do a double batch. I use cream of mushroom soup and I put in two quart packages of fresh sauteed mushroom slices about 30 minutes before it's done. My daughter who loves this so much she wants it for her birthday meal calls it "Crack Chicken" because she is addicted.
Gravy says
We love this leftovers are even better. Next time I make it I will shred the chicken put back in then put the cooked angle hair in toss them serve.

Im sure you could but I don't have an instant pot so I don't know.

Marye says
No it gets gummy.
Aneka says
can I use a chicken bouillon cube with required water to measure ilo chicken broth?
Marye says
sure. Just maybe cut back on salt a touch.
Deni says
Due to allergies I can’t use the Italian dressing. What can I substitute
Marye says
You could try ranch. Without knowing what your allergies are I really can't say.
Brett Wolverton says
Prepared this late last night before bed and allowed it to cook overnight on low for ten hour setting on crockpot using tenderloins.
The sauce was the perfect thickness and the chicken fell apart to the touch.
Will definitely keep this in my meal rotation.
Bob Rauscher says
I made this last night for our Friday work lunch today. I doubled the recipe and used 1 can of Cream of Chicken, 1 can of Cream of Mushroom w/ Garlic along with "zesty" Italian dressing mix. The garlic cloves I used were quite large, and it still didn't have the garlic flavor that I was expecting. I had also seasoned the chicken with salt & pepper before placing them in the crock pot. I made both angel hair and brown rice to go with the dish. It worked well with both.
Now the results... like Nancy said, I found the sauce to be quite a bit thinner than expected. Next time I'll either cut the broth in half or eliminate it all together. I also found it to be rather salty. Next time I'll season the chicken with pepper and some other spices like cumin, chili pepper or perhaps some cayenne.
Kimberlie says
I was really excited about trying this recipe and ended up preparing for dinner. I followed the recipe exactly as written and it was bland, not flavorful at all. Will not be making this again. My family was very disappointed.
Hattie Crissman says
Is serving size one cup or 1/2 cup?
Marye says
I don't measure serving sizes - sorry. It's 1/8 the recipe

Served for company without trying it first. Has now become a favorite for all who have had it.
Irene Senger says
Hi! Does the cooking time change if chicken thighs are used instead of breast? Or how about using half breasts and half thighs? TY!

Nope. Cooking time is the same.
