📖 Variations
- Boneless chicken thighs can be substituted for chicken breast.
- So can boneless pork.
- Add some vegetables to this chicken, by adding a bag of frozen mixed vegetables at the last hour of cooking.
- If you are a mushroom fan, switch out the cream of chicken soup for cream of mushroom soup or a can of Campbell's golden mushroom soup. Or just try this slow cooker chicken stroganoff.
- You can add sliced fresh mushrooms if you like them.
- Change up the flavor of this delectable sauce completely by using a ranch packet or a zesty Italian dressing packet.
- Parmesan cheese makes a great addition to this delicious dish, I recommend using freshly grated parmesan, you can add it to the
slow cooker with the cream soup mixture. - Out of chicken stock? Chicken broth, vegetable broth, or white wine can be used instead, I like to add extra garlic if I am using chicken broth instead of chicken stock.

🥫 How to store leftover angel chicken
Store leftover angel chicken in an airtight container (or covered with plastic wrap) in the fridge for up to three days.
Reheat it in the microwave for 2 minutes, stir, and then heat in 30 second intervals until hot. You can also warm it gently on top of the stove, stirring often.
Don't freeze the leftovers. The sauce can become grainy.
Expert Tip:
Y'all be sure to spray the crockpot well with no-stick cooking spray or use a
💭 Things to know
- Be sure to use the packet of dry Italian seasoning. Add it to the crock pot DRY.
- Keep the cover on the crockpot! Every time you take it off you let the heat out and it needs to build up again.
- If you are out of garlic cloves, you can use one teaspoon of garlic powder in place of the cloves.
- Add a dash of white wine to this dish to make a rich sauce.
- Be sure that you do not melt the butter and cream cheese. You only want to soften them so that you can mix them together.
- If you are using chicken tenderloins instead of boneless skinless chicken breasts, you can reduce the cooking time down to four hours on the low setting instead of six.
- For extra flavor, you can season the chicken breasts with salt and black pepper before adding them to the
slow cooker . - I always like to cook my chicken breasts on low heat so that they don't become tough.
🍝 Angel hair vs spaghetti
The difference between the two noodles is that angel hair is much finer than spaghetti noodles. Angel hair pasta is best for light and creamy sauces instead of a hearty tomato-based sauce.
🫗 Is you sauce too thin?
I've been really confused by comments that the sauce is too thin. I'm not sure why that would be but here are my suggestions:
- Shred the chicken in the sauce about 30 minutes before you plan to serve it. It's meant to go over rice, pasta, bread, or potatoes so the shredded chicken will help thicken in up.
- Make sure you're using dry Italian dressing mix and not liquid Italian dressing.
- Use regular Philadelphia brand cream cheese. Do not use low fat or fat free. Do not use an off brand. You can use up to 8 ounces if you wish.
- Add just ¼ cup of chicken stock and see if you like the consistency better.
- If it's too thin you can save it by removing as much of the sauce as possible, mixing in 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, and heating it in a pan over the stove until it gets as thick as you like.
👩🍳 FAQs
Cooking chicken in a crockpot is generally done on the low setting. This will ensure that the meat is not overcooked or tough.
Yes, you can overcook chicken in a crockpot. If left on too long, the chicken may become dry and tough.
Yes, you can but I recommend that you thaw it first, so that your sauce doesn't become runny.

Delish as written. However, I too, found the sauce to be a little runny for my taste. I used tenders and they were perfectly cooked after 3 hours on low. I ladled the sauce into a pad and thickened with 2 TBS of cornstarch and a half cup of water. Returned the sauce back to the crackpot on warm until the noodles were ready. Served over angel hair with steamed broccoli. Thanks for the wonderfully easy meal!
Michele C says
This was super easy to make and really delicious. I salted the chicken and added a dash of pepper to each before adding to the crockpot. I also added some parmesan cheese with the soup mixture. I cooked the chicken for the full 8 hours but it turned out a bit dry so next time I may cook it 7 hours. The sauce was yummy and flavorful over the chicken and pasta. Served it will texas toast and a tossed green salad. A family hit and definetly on my rotation list. Thanks for sharing this great recipe.
Tedde O says
I loved this. I made a few changes out of necessity. I used boneless skinless chicken thighs. I used cream of celery soup in place of cream of chicken. I made my own Italian season mix instead of using store bought (easier to control salt content). I used 1/2 cup of chicken broth after comments sauce being too thin. And I used 1/2 block of cream cheese (1/2 cup).
Sauce was still thin but delicious. I think next time I will dust chicken with flour or cornstarch before cooking so sauce can thicken as it cooks.

Can you make this in an instapot?
If so, what would be the directions
Thank you!
Marye says
Tina I don't own an instant pot so I have no idea - sorry.
Mellissa says
Going to make this soon .

EVERYONE LOVED THIS RECIPE! this will be a regular rotation meal, thankyou!
Shannon says
One comment said they just dumped all the ingredients in crock pot instead of mixing it together on stove. they also used 1 stick of butter and the entire package of cream cheese. Any advice about doing it that way?
Marye says
I always make the recipe as written so I can't really comment on that.
Tammy says
I have it cooking now .i didn’t have any Italian dressing so I threw in a ranch dressing I will let you know how it turns out
Marcia says
How was it with the ranch? My husband isn’t a fan of rosemary. Thyme, or some of the other spices
Michelle Gilbert says
This was good.. I did the recipe a little different and am posting because I seen a lot of questions about what you can do different..
I followed it to a T except I just dumped everything in there instead of mixing together figured I could mix it later…
I didn’t have Italian seasoning on hand so I used about a cup of Italian dressing.. and instead of chicken stock I used just a chicken stock cube.(so basically substituted the liquid for stock for the liquid in the dressing) also because I didn’t feel like cutting a block of cream cheese or a stick a butter I just put the whole 8 oz block of cream cheese and stick of butter in the pot.. ( after it was done I feel that it helped it make it a bit creamer (I noticed a lot of comments saying that it was really runny)
I cooked on low for 4 hrs took chicken out and shredded it(so tender) (also took out the 3 glarlic cloves and smashed and mixed with shredded chicken) while chicken was out I wisked the liquid which was a creamy consistency till it was a nice texture..
Added chicken back To pot stirred it up and put it on warm till my noodles were done..
Linda says
Are you supposed to weigh the seasoning mix, because the packet is more than ..6 ounce. I put. most of the packet and it was way to salty.
Marye says
All the packets I've seen are 0.6 or 0.7 ounces - and it wasn't salty.
Shauna says
Sauce is runny how do I thicken it?
Marye says
Pour the sauce off and simmer it on the stove until it reduces. I'm not sure why it would be runny - there's very little liquid in it.
Sherry says

Kaitlyn says
If you are in a rush, can you cook it on high instead of low?
Marye says
The chicken won't be as tender.
Georgine says
Love this recipe. If you don't want to spray the heck out of the crock pot line it with the plastic liners. you can get those at the dollar tree. Easy clean up.
Lynn Hagan says
One of the tips at the end of the recipe was to add white cooking wine for extra flavor. Most cooks know not to EVER use COOKING wine in a recipe. It tastes nothing like white wine and is full of salt. Instead use a dry white wine (Pinot Grigio, Riesling or Chardonnay are good.) If you wouldn’t drink it, don’t cook with it!
Marye says
Lynn that was absolutely a typo. You are correct and I am fixing it. Sometimes my brain goes faster than my fingers.
Jennifer says
Do you have a recipe for this using the instant pot?
Marye says
No, I don't. Sorry.
Margaret H. says
I think all you would have to do to make in the Instant pot is add 1 cup water or extra broth. 20-25 minutes on High pressure.
Denise C. says
Hi! What can I substitute seasoning wise in place of any dry dressing mix?
Marye says
You could substitute Italian seasoning mix but it won't be as flavorful.
KP says
Can I use Italian dressing instead of the dry mix? How much would I use?
Marye says
No you can't. It won't work in this recipe.
Brooke says
My sauce seems pretty runny and it looks like the oil separated from the rest. It still tastes pretty good but I don’t love the runny sauce. Any tips on what went wrong?
Marye says
There is no oil in this recipe?
Ash says
What can be sure in place of Italian dressing mix?
I’m not sure what that is or if I can find it.
Marye says
It's a dry Italian dressing. You can click on the link in the ingredients list at the top of the post. You may be able to use Italian seasoning blend but it won't be the same.
