Y'all, the sauce on this chicken is amazing. The boneless chicken breasts come out super tender and buttery and the creamy sauce makes you want to just lick the plate until it's as shiny as the top of Uncle Ted's head. It's honestly one of my favorite crockpot chicken breast recipes!

📖 Variations
- Boneless chicken thighs can be substituted for chicken breast.
- So can boneless pork.
- Add some vegetables to this chicken, by adding a bag of frozen mixed vegetables at the last hour of cooking.
- If you are a mushroom fan, switch out the cream of chicken soup for cream of mushroom soup or a can of Campbell's golden mushroom soup. Or just try this slow cooker chicken stroganoff.
- You can add sliced fresh mushrooms if you like them.
- Change up the flavor of this delectable sauce completely by using a ranch packet or a zesty Italian dressing packet.
- Parmesan cheese makes a great addition to this delicious dish, I recommend using freshly grated parmesan, you can add it to the
slow cooker with the cream soup mixture. - Out of chicken stock? Chicken broth, vegetable broth, or white wine can be used instead, I like to add extra garlic if I am using chicken broth instead of chicken stock.

🥫 How to store leftover angel chicken
Store leftover angel chicken in an airtight container (or covered with plastic wrap) in the fridge for up to three days.
Reheat it in the microwave for 2 minutes, stir, and then heat in 30 second intervals until hot. You can also warm it gently on top of the stove, stirring often.
Don't freeze the leftovers. The sauce can become grainy.
Expert Tip:
Y'all be sure to spray the crockpot well with no-stick cooking spray or use a
💭 Things to know
- Be sure to use the packet of dry Italian seasoning. Add it to the crock pot DRY.
- Keep the cover on the crockpot! Every time you take it off you let the heat out and it needs to build up again.
- If you are out of garlic cloves, you can use one teaspoon of garlic powder in place of the cloves.
- Add a dash of white wine to this dish to make a rich sauce.
- Be sure that you do not melt the butter and cream cheese. You only want to soften them so that you can mix them together.
- If you are using chicken tenderloins instead of boneless skinless chicken breasts, you can reduce the cooking time down to four hours on the low setting instead of six.
- For extra flavor, you can season the chicken breasts with salt and black pepper before adding them to the
slow cooker . - I always like to cook my chicken breasts on low heat so that they don't become tough.
🍝 Angel hair vs spaghetti
The difference between the two noodles is that angel hair is much finer than spaghetti noodles. Angel hair pasta is best for light and creamy sauces instead of a hearty tomato-based sauce.
🫗 Is you sauce too thin?
I've been really confused by comments that the sauce is too thin. I'm not sure why that would be but here are my suggestions:
- Shred the chicken in the sauce about 30 minutes before you plan to serve it. It's meant to go over rice, pasta, bread, or potatoes so the shredded chicken will help thicken in up.
- Make sure you're using dry Italian dressing mix and not liquid Italian dressing.
- Use regular Philadelphia brand cream cheese. Do not use low fat or fat free. Do not use an off brand. You can use up to 8 ounces if you wish.
- Add just ¼ cup of chicken stock and see if you like the consistency better.
- If it's too thin you can save it by removing as much of the sauce as possible, mixing in 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, and heating it in a pan over the stove until it gets as thick as you like.
👩🍳 FAQs
Cooking chicken in a crockpot is generally done on the low setting. This will ensure that the meat is not overcooked or tough.
Yes, you can overcook chicken in a crockpot. If left on too long, the chicken may become dry and tough.
Yes, you can but I recommend that you thaw it first, so that your sauce doesn't become runny.

Olivia Koepp says
This is one of the most boring and flavorless recipes I’ve ever made. Tasted completely beige and like it was designed by someone with the palate of a toddler. We used cream of mushroom soup and italian dressing seasoning and served over angel hair.
Marye says
Thanks for your input Olivia. Since people have such diverse palates it's always a good thing to read a recipe and adjust seasoning to fit your own tastes. 🙂
Amy says
This recipe very quickly became a family favorite. We have it at least once a week. I have not had any issues with the sauce being too thin it’s always perfect. I started shredding the chicken and it is so much better. I have also made a couple other additions to the recipe just for my personal preference. Instead of Italian dressing seasoning I swapped it with ranch seasoning. I also add peas because I love peas but find it adds a nice little texture to it. I’m sure a lot of people won’t like these edits but we love them even though the recipe is perfect as is without any changes.
Joanna says
This is so delicious! I threw frozen veggies in a hour before, as suggested. I will make it again and again!
Marye says
That's awesome, Joanna. I'm so happy you like it!
Nicole says
Can this be made in a pressure cooker?
Marye says
I don't see why not but I've never done it
Tracy says
Yes! I did it tonight. You’ll need a trivet under the chicken. Then pour the chicken stock over the chicken, next sprinkle the seasonings, then mix the other ingredients but *don’t* stir it in with the stock or it won’t come to pressure easily.
I did 17 minutes on high pressure then allowed it to naturally release.
Kathy Cranford says
This turned out great. It was a perfect consistency. Not runny or thin at all
I used 2 chicken breasts and cooking time was about 2 1/2 hours (I only had cream of celery, which worked out fine)
Added a little grated fresh parmesan and served with a salad and garlic bread
Definitely a hit
Dorothy says
I made this today and my husband and I both loved it. I think next time I’ll add some peas and mushrooms but we did enjoy it as is.
Marye says
Adding peas, mushrooms, broccoli, or spinach works really well with this recipe. So glad you liked it!
Debi Schriewer says
Can this be cooked in an Instant Pot?
Marye says
I don't have an instant pot.
Pj Cruz says
Hi, thanks for the recipe. Heart disease is the number one killer and your recipe says a serving has 945 of sodium, I was wondering if you are using chicken soup as a thickening agent? If so, there are many other, low or no salt alternatives. Is there a recommendation you can make to sub out the cream soup?
Marye says
You could use a low sodium cream soup - I'm not sure what else would work.
Diana says
I made this for dinner, and the only thing I added was mushrooms! Absolutely delicious!
Jillian Van Patten says
Wish there was a way (besides the low sodium soup) to make the sodium lower! That being said, my husband loved it, was disappointed I didn’t make more than 2 breasts, so there were no leftovers. I did use a little cornstarch/water to thicken up the sauce, and served whole breasts over zucchini noodles. Thumbs up, thanks for a new recipe in the rotation!
Michelle Miller says
I've started using my crockpot, so this was my first try. It was delicious and the perfect consistency. I put it over angel hair, but I'm also going to try it over some egg noodles. Great recipe!
Josie says
I was able to find organic cream of chicken and I used chickpea pasta. My hubs found this recipe and asked me to make it for him so I did. He loved it but sadly my 3 and 5 yr old didn't like it one bit. They're incredibly picky. I would make again though and use a healthier seasoning than the one I used in the recipe. Wonderful!
Donna says
I made this for a church dinner last evening. It was a huge success!! I cut the large breast in half to ensure they would cook completely. I added a sprinkle of fresh parsley on top for color with fresh Parmesan cheese. Served with a fresh spring salad mix. Several asked for the recipe.
Laurie says
A new family favorite!!
Karen says
When people are saying ots too thin... I wonder if they are using 6oz of Italian dressing instead of .6 Oz?
I'm trying ilthis recipe today and almost made that mistake
Marye says
I don't know. It seems to work well for some and others have trouble.
Kristy says
The recipe says Italian seasoning not dressing.
Marye says
It's Good Seasons Italian Dressing mix. It's a dry. mix in an envelope - different from Italian seasoning in the little jars.
Kaye says
They may be using Italian dressing instead of the dressing mix in a packet which is how I read the recipe.
Marye says
That's what I'm thinking.
The Tamster says
I would use less chicken broth. Too runny.Maybe half the butter too. Butter seemed to be too much when ready to serve. I used fat filled crean cheese. I added little corn starch to thicken up the sauce right before serving I served over noodle roni angel hair herb pasta. I made garlic parm brussel sprouts too
Michelle says
I absolutely LOVE this recipe! It's so quick and easy to make, and it's DELICIOUS! My son, who is a very picky eater (even at 28) also loves it. He even asked me to make it ~ which is something that he never does. "Hey, when are you going to make 'that chicken thing' again?" LOL! This is a 5 star plus recipe in this house!
Caroline says
Made this the other night and wow, it was so yummy! I used chicken tenders, fat-free cream cheese (I know the tips did not recommend but it was all I had), 1/3 cup of chicken broth, and it turned out so well (not runny at all like others have mentioned)! I cooked on low for about 4 hours with the chicken tenders per the tips section. My husband loved this dish and I will be adding it to our rotation!
Caroline says
Hi! If I wanted to add some spinach to this dish, when should I add it to the crock pot? New to crock pot recipes! 🙂
Marye says
I'd add it the last 30 minutes
Deborah L Heide says
When you mention a "splash" of white wine, is there an approximate measurement that's a "splash"?
Marye says
maybe a tablespoon or two.
